Explosive ordnance contamination in Syria

Overview

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has warned of the ongoing deadly threat posed by explosive ordnance contamination in Syria. The contamination continues to impact residential areas, livelihoods, and civilian movement.

In a recent week, twelve separate incidents involving explosive devices were recorded across six Syrian provinces. These incidents resulted in nine deaths, including six children, and 13 injuries. Raqqa reported the highest number of incidents, while a landmine strike on a civilian vehicle in Deir ez-Zor was noted as the most lethal event, killing five children and injuring three others.

Since December 8, 2024, more than 1,400 explosive incidents have been documented throughout the country, causing approximately 880 deaths and 2,500 civilian injuries. Over two-thirds of these incidents have occurred on grazing and agricultural lands. UN officials have emphasized the necessity of large-scale clearance operations, risk education, and victim assistance to facilitate the safe return of displaced populations.
