Extradition of Manjit Singh Bedi for SNAP fraud
Overview
Manjit Singh Bedi, a 64-year-old grocery store owner from Kent, Washington, has been extradited from India to the United States to face federal charges involving a massive food assistance fraud scheme.
Bedi, who operated the Asian Grocery Store in Tacoma, is accused of defrauding the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) of at least $600,000 between early 2024 and mid-2025. Prosecutors allege that Bedi offered SNAP recipients cash in exchange for funds on their Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards at a rate of ‘50 cents on the dollar’, allowing him to pocket the difference without providing actual food.
Following his initial indictment, Bedi allegedly violated court-ordered travel restrictions by crossing into Canada and fleeing to India. After being added to the FBI’s ‘Most Wanted Fraudsters’ list, he was arrested in India and returned to the Western District of Washington. U.S. prosecutors have indicated they will seek to detain Bedi pending trial due to his previous attempt to flee the country.
