Extratropical cyclone impact in Iceland

Overview

An intense extratropical cyclone, identified as the remnants of Hurricane Isaias, struck Iceland, causing significant destruction and setting record-breaking atmospheric conditions. The storm underwent rapid intensification, a process known as bombogenesis, where air pressure dropped by more than 50 hectopascals in 24 hours.

In southern Iceland, the pressure at Fagurhólsmýri farm reached 934.6 hPa, surpassing the previous October record established in 1963. The cyclone produced extreme wind gusts, including a measurement of 205 km/h near the Eyjafjallajökull volcano and in Hvammur.

Damage reported in the fishing village of Siglufjörður included roofs being torn off two residences and an industrial building. Other impacts included power outages in Bolungarvík, wind speeds of approximately 131 km/h at Vestmannaeyjar airport, and sleet and snow in northern Iceland. Rescue teams were mobilized to assist affected areas as authorities advised residents to remain indoors.
