Overview

Extreme summer heat across Turkey is placing significant physical strain on various sectors of manual labor. In the southern city of Adana and throughout the southeast, including Diyarbakır, Mardin, Batman, and Şanlıurfa, temperatures have reached between 40°C and 45°C. Road construction crews, such as the Kozan-Çetin Sokak team, have reported working with asphalt that reaches nearly 200°C, with some workers consuming up to 20 litres of water per shift. Local officials, including Kozan mayor Mustafa Atlı, have urged teams to keep roads open to ensure project completion.

In other regions, the heatwave is impacting agricultural and traditional food production. In Eskişehir, female laborers harvest greens like parsley and arugula in temperatures up to 40°C, often working from 06:00 to 16:00 while using hats and scarves for protection. In Erzincan, women working with traditional tandoor ovens face internal temperatures of 50°C, frequently starting at 04:00 to meet demand for domestic and international distribution.

As the heat persists, food service workers are facing even more extreme indoor environments. In Cizre, bakers endure temperatures exceeding 80°C, while döner chefs in Van report working in environments reaching 80-90°C due to ambient heat and stoves. In Diyarbakır, toast vendors struggle with indoor temperatures between 60 and 65°C, with some avoiding air conditioning to prevent bread from drying out. In Arsuz, one business owner has provided relief by installing air conditioning in a small restroom for customers.
