Extreme rainfall in Greece and Crete
Overview
In early October 2026, Crete experienced extreme rainfall, particularly in mountainous regions. In Anogeia, Rethymno, measurements exceeded 361.4 mm over a two-day period. Experts from the METEO unit warned that saturated soil and full torrents increased the risk of further complications as new waves of storms were forecasted.
By the middle of October, data from the National Observatory of Athens indicated that precipitation levels across Greece remained exceptionally high. Crete saw the most significant impact, with the Samaria – Xyloskalo station in Chania recording 1,011 mm of rain. Other Cretan stations, including Samaria – Farangi and Anogia, also recorded high totals. While Crete contained all seven Greek stations recording over 500 mm of rain, other mainland regions such as Evia and Corinthia also experienced heavy precipitation.
