Extreme weather continues to impact Mexico and Ecuador, characterized by heavy rainfall, tropical activity, and emerging drought conditions.

In Ecuador, the Instituto Nacional de Meteorología e Hidrología (INAMHI) issued Meteorological Warning No. 74, effective through September 27, 2026. The warning identifies risks of water accumulation, fallen trees, and fog in the Interandean region—specifically Pichincha and Bolívar—as well as coastal areas including Guayas and Esmeraldas. In Quito, temperatures are expected to remain cool between 8°C and 18°C.

Mexico is experiencing significant weather volatility. In the southeast, a trough over the Yucatán Peninsula combined with Tropical Wave 41 is triggering heavy storms and electrical activity in Campeche, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo, leading to local flooding and traffic disruptions. States such as Puebla, Hidalgo, and Querétaro also face risks of rising river levels and landslides due to heavy rains.

In the Pacific, authorities are monitoring a low-pressure area south of the Gulf of Tehuantepec that has a 40% chance of developing into a tropical cyclone, potentially named ‘Rachel’. This follows the recent activity of Hurricane Polo.

Simultaneously, southern Mexico is facing severe water scarcity. In Oaxaca, 171 municipalities are experiencing drought affecting maize crops. Morelos is also seeing significant dryness, with 84% of the state experiencing temporary drought. Conagua reports that high percentages of territory in Quintana Roo, Chiapas, and Guerrero are also drought-affected.
