Extreme weather patterns in Brazil

Overview

In early September, a strong polar air mass brought record-breaking cold temperatures to Southeast Brazil. São Paulo recorded its coldest September afternoon since 2000, while Rio de Janeiro experienced its lowest maximum temperature of the year and its coldest September afternoon since 2015.

By mid-September, weather patterns shifted toward heavy precipitation. Eight states and the Federal District surpassed historical monthly rainfall records within the first 15 days of the month. São Paulo saw significant increases, with some stations nearly tripling previous records.

This heavy rainfall, driven by atypical cold fronts and the El Niño phenomenon, provided drought relief in southern Brazil. Specifically, the entire territory of Paraná has been declared free of drought, ending a period of water scarcity that had lasted over a year. However, these same meteorological conditions have contributed to worsening drought in the North and Northeast regions.
