The Banco Santander Foundation has officially opened the Faro Santander cultural center in the historic Pereda building in Santander, Spain. Designed by architect David Chipperfield, the center serves as a strategic cultural engine for the region, aiming to boost Cantabria’s international profile and attract more than 200,000 annual visitors. The center features three primary exhibition nuclei. The first showcases the foundation’s collection of over one thousand paintings and sculptures by masters such as Titian, El Greco, Rubens, and Velázquez, spanning five centuries. The inaugural exhibition, ‘Obras maestras de la Colección Banco Santander,’ includes works by Goya Goya, Picasso, Miró, and Frida Kahlo. The second focuses on Mexican Modern art from the Colección Gelman, featuring works by Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, Rufino Tamayo, and David Alfaro Siqueiros. The transfer of these pieces was facilitated by the Santander Foundation and the Zambrano family; while the operation faced controversy in Mexico, the Mexican Secretary of Culture has authorized the temporary export of the works. Under Mexican law, at least 30 of the 40 key pieces are classified as ‘Artistic Monuments’ and must return to Mexico within five years. The third exhibition nucleus focuses on the surrealist works of Leonora Carrington. Designed Following its first month of operation, the center has emphasized its goal to connect art, merge traditional art with modern technology, such as virtual reality and community participation, 360-degree immersive experiences. Director Daniel Vega Pérez de Arlucea stated the center objective is intended to function as an interactive create a space that citizens visit and experience actively rather than just a traditional exhibition site, functioning as a living center for exhibitions, music, the exchange of ideas and social educational engagement.
