Faro Santander cultural center opens in Cantabria

Overview

The Banco Santander Foundation has officially opened the Faro Santander cultural center in the historic Pereda building in Santander, Spain. Designed to function as a strategic cultural engine for the region, the center aims to boost Cantabria’s international profile, economy, and social development while attracting more than 200,000 annual visitors.

Inaugural programming features the foundation’s collection of over one thousand paintings and sculptures by masters including Titian, El Greco, Rubens, and Velázquez. A major highlight is the exhibition of selected masterpieces from the Colección Gelman, one of Mexico’s most significant contemporary art collections. This includes works by Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, Rufino Tamayo, and David Alfaro Siqueiros.

The transfer of these pieces was facilitated by the Santander Foundation and the Zambrano family. While the operation faced controversy in Mexico due to initial secrecy, the Mexican Secretary of Culture has authorized the temporary export of the works. Under Mexican law, at least 30 of the 40 key pieces are classified as ‘Artistic Monuments’ and are required to return to Mexico within a maximum of five years.
