Fatal assault of Enmanuel Contreras in Santo Domingo

Overview

In July 2026, Enmanuel Contreras Medina was critically injured during a Facebook Marketplace transaction in the Los Praditos sector of Santo Domingo. Reports indicate that after Contreras transferred RD$15,000 to a third-party account to purchase an iPhone 15 Pro Max, the seller, Lenin Jhericop Núñez de León, allegedly refused to provide the device and attacked Contreras with a baseball bat.

Contreras sustained a severe traumatic brain injury requiring emergency neurosurgery. Following the assault, Núñez de León fled to the United States. He was later arrested at Las Américas International Airport upon his return from Miami.

The case has drawn significant public attention due to allegations that one suspect is the son of a police colonel and another is the child of university employees. The Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (UASD) issued condolences, though the victim’s family has criticized the university rector, accusing him of protecting the involved parties.
