Fatal minibus accident during Romanian dog rescue mission
Overview
On September 24, 2026, a multi-vehicle collision occurred on the DN6 national road in Caraș-Severin county, Romania, near the Serbian border. A UK-registered minibus, operated by the animal welfare charity Homeward Bound, reportedly veered into oncoming traffic and struck a heavy goods vehicle head-on. The impact triggered a chain reaction involving a second truck and a van.
The accident resulted in the deaths of two British volunteers, Allison Condon of Northamptonshire and Rachael Harvey-Purkiss of Essex, as well as eight dogs being transported for rescue. One 60-year-old man was injured.
Following the incident, community groups and the charity released tributes. Homeward Bound described the victims as ‘two rare diamonds’ with hearts ‘full of nothing but love and care for animals.’ Efforts have since been made to support the families of the deceased, including a GoFundMe campaign for Harvey-Purkiss’s husband.
