Fatal passenger accident at Santiago Metro Pajaritos station
Overview
On September 2, 2026, a fatal accident occurred at the Pajaritos station on Line 1 of the Santiago Metro. Wilmer Quispe, a 38-year-old Peruvian national, was struck and killed by a train while on the platform.
Investigations and security footage suggest the incident was caused by visual confusion. During the installation of new platform screen doors, the open safety frameworks reportedly created an optical illusion. Quispe believed a stationary train on the opposite track was on his side and ran toward the edge to board it, at which point another train entered the station and struck him.
The victim’s family has alleged negligence by Metro, citing a lack of physical barriers, inadequate signage, and poor containment during the construction phase. The accident led to the temporary closure of several Line 1 stations, including Salvador, Manuel Montt, Pedro de Valdivia, and Los Leones, to facilitate investigations.
