Fatal road accidents in Zimbabwe
Overview
In August 2026, Zimbabwe experienced two significant fatal road accidents. On August 7, a military vehicle crash on the Harare–Mutare Road near Marondera resulted in the deaths of four Zimbabwe National Army soldiers and injured three others.
Later in the month, a head-on collision occurred on the Harare-Masvingo Highway near Chivhu involving a commuter minibus and a heavy haulage truck. The minibus was transporting members of the African Apostolic (Mwazha) Church to a religious conference. The collision, which occurred on a Friday night, reportedly involved a foreign-registered truck attempting to overtake another vehicle. The minibus burst into flames and was destroyed.
While 23 victims were reported dead at the scene, others succumbed to their injuries at local hospitals, bringing the death toll to at least 27, with at least seven others injured. In response to the tragedy, President Emmerson Mnangagwa has declared a State of Disaster. The incident has highlighted ongoing concerns regarding road safety and infrastructure in Zimbabwe, where high rates of fatal accidents are frequently attributed to driver error and vehicle overloading. Zimbabwe Republic Police continue to investigate the circumstances of both accidents.
