A series of fatal truck accidents has occurred in Gwalior, India. In late September, a speeding truck struck two students on a motorcycle near the Khurai Crossing. The collision killed Crossing, killing a 17-year-old student and left leaving another in critical condition. The driver fled the scene but was later pursued by police. In mid-October, a paddy-laden truck crashed into a crowd of devotees near the Sheetla Mata Temple during the Navratri festival. The accident occurred around 1:30 AM on a steep slope on Chhinor Road where heavy vehicles are restricted. The vehicle reportedly broke through police barricades and checkpoints, killing between 12 and 15 people—including women and children—and injuring approximately 39 to 42 others. The truck also struck the temple’s outer wall and gate, injuring two police personnel on duty, and damaged local shops. The impact caused the temple wall to collapse, trapping some individuals under debris. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav expressed condolences and announced financial compensation: 400,000 rupees for the families of the deceased, 200,000 rupees for those seriously injured, and 50,000 rupees for other injured individuals. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also announced an ex-gratia of 200,000 rupees from the PMNRF for each deceased and 50,000 rupees for the injured. The state government has also pledged free medical treatment for all injured persons. Gwalior Collector Ruchika Chauhan and SSP Dharmveer Singh have launched investigations to determine Following allegations of negligence regarding how the vehicle bypassed the established Navratri security perimeter. A perimeter, a City Superintendent of Police (CSP) was removed from his post and eight other police personnel were suspended. Investigations continue, with the Regional Transport Office (RTO) team has been dispatched to conduct conducting a mechanical inspection to determine if technical failure, such as brake failure, failure or overloading contributed to the crash. Investigators are also noting that the driver may have been using Google Maps for navigation. The truck owner and driver have been arrested.
