Fatal vehicle accidents in Bihar

Overview

In August 2026, two separate fatal vehicle accidents occurred in Bihar, India, involving crowds gathered for cultural or religious events.

On August 21, in the West Champaran district, a passenger bus traveling from Gorakhpur to Bettiah lost control while attempting to avoid an oncoming truck. The vehicle veered into a roadside gathering for a Chhathiyar ceremony, killing five people and injuring several others. Police registered a case for rash and negligent driving and began a search for the drivers of both the bus and the truck.

On August 25, a high-speed vehicle struck a group performing Kirtan during Jhulan Puja near a temple on National Highway 327E in the Supaul district. The collision killed five individuals and seriously injured one person. The vehicle traveled approximately 50 meters after impact before hitting a roadside shop. Following the incident, the District Magistrate announced that families of the deceased would receive 400,000 rupees in assistance. Local residents attributed the heightened risk to roadside encroachment and temporary shops along the highway.
