Fehmarnbelt Tunnel construction cyberattack
Overview
A major cyberattack targeting the Femern Link Contractors (FLC) consortium has disrupted the construction of the Fehmarnbelt Tunnel, an infrastructure project connecting Denmark and Germany. The initial incident paralyzed operations by disabling electronic access cards and immobilizing specialized maritime equipment, including cranes and ships. Due to the breach, work was largely suspended as employees were instructed to avoid using computers or Wi-Fi.
Following the disruption, FLC confirmed that the attack resulted in the theft of a large amount of sensitive personal information from its IT systems. While the breach caused construction to reach a near standstill for several days, Sund & Bælt stated there were no indications that its own systems had been compromised. Although the perpetrator remains unknown, officials suggested the incident could be a form of hybrid warfare, following previous warnings regarding high cyberattack threats in the region.
