The Brazilian Army has reached several historical milestones regarding the integration and leadership of women within its ranks.
In August 2026, the military celebrated the participation of the first female recruits in a Soldier’s Day parade in Brasília. This follows the implementation of the Female Initial Military Service program, which saw 1,010 women assigned to the Army from an initial selection of 1,467 women across the three branches of the Armed Forces. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva characterized the event as a symbol of a “modern Brazil that rejects barriers.”
Following this integration, the Army appointed 1st Sergeant Barbara de Lima Alves as the first woman to serve as Adjunto de Comando (Command Adjunct). During a ceremony at the João Pessoa Garrison Hospital, Alves assumed this advisory role designed to support commanders by integrating the perspectives of non-commissioned officers into management, military activities, and organizational discipline.
