Femicide judicial proceedings in South America

Overview

Legal proceedings regarding femicide cases in South America have seen varying judicial outcomes in Chile and Argentina.

In Villarrica, Chile, a judge ordered preventive detention for a 41-year-old man accused of the double femicide of a 34-year-old woman and the rape and murder of her 15-year-old daughter. The suspect allegedly confessed to using an axe during the crimes, which occurred in the La Araucanía region. A 10-month investigation period has been established.

In Neuquén, Argentina, the Tribunal de Impugnación ordered house arrest for Jorge Octavio Linco, a suspect in the June 2025 femicide of Corina Mabel Mena. This decision followed the annulment of a previous jury trial that had found him responsible. While judges noted risks of flight, they determined house arrest was necessary due to temporal limits on preventive detention. The ruling has faced opposition from the victim’s family, prompting the prosecution to seek an alternative location to ensure safety.
