Fentanyl theft investigation in Esperanza, Argentina

Overview

Authorities in Argentina have launched an investigation into the theft of at least six fentanyl ampoules from the SAMCo de Esperanza medical center. Investigators discovered that fentanyl labels had been placed over ampoules containing ranitidine, a medication used for stomach acid.

Health Minister Silvia Ciancio has initiated an internal administrative inquiry and filed a criminal complaint with the Public Prosecutor's Office, describing the incident as one of “extreme gravity.” While initial suspicions were directed toward a local physician, the professional has maintained his innocence, stating he was the individual who reported the missing medication and the label tampering to hospital administration. Investigators are currently examining multiple suspects to determine the full extent of the theft.
