Fibre Excellence faces liquidation after rescue bid rejected
Entities: Fibre Excellence · Tarascon · Saint‑Gauden · Matthieu Pigasse · Roland Lescure
Overview
Following a court‑ordered bankruptcy filing in June 2026, French pulp‑and‑electricity group Fibre Excellence remains at risk of liquidation. On 21 July 2026 about 660 workers occupied the Saint‑Gaudens mill while awaiting a Toulouse commercial‑court ruling. Financier Mathieu Pigasse submitted a rescue offer similar to earlier proposals and was granted a three‑week extension to finalise it. The government has been urged to raise the purchase price for the group's electricity assets, guarantee timber supplies and secure backing from Bpifrance.
On 27 July 2026 the Toulouse commercial court rejected Pigasse’s roughly €90 million bid, deeming it insufficient despite conditions requiring state support for electricity costs, timber supply and carbon quotas. The decision threatens the roughly 670 jobs at the remaining Saint‑Gaudens and Tarascon plants, which remain occupied by workers. A separate, undisclosed industrialist has submitted a letter of intent to take over the Saint‑Gaudens site. Officials warn that liquidation could eliminate up to 10 000 indirect jobs, cut the trade balance by €1‑2 billion and incur around €500 million in environmental cleanup costs.
