Overview

Internal conflict has intensified within FIFA following the termination of Chief Operating Officer Kevin Lamour on August 17, 2026. Lamour’s departure occurred after he publicly criticized the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) project, a proposed $20 billion subsidiary intended to manage commercial rights for major tournaments through private investment. Lamour characterized the initiative as ‘the project of one person’ and alleged that the administration had ‘deceived’ stakeholders regarding its true scope and lack of transparency.

While FIFA eventually abandoned the FFE plan following opposition from confederations such as UEFA and CONCACAF, the dismissal of Lamour has drawn sharp criticism from football leadership. Lise Klaveness, president of the Norwegian Football Federation, accused FIFA of practicing ‘management by fear’ and described the firing as ‘unacceptable.’ She has since urged football leaders to resist orders that do not serve the sport and has called for the resignation of President Gianni Infantino.

Further condemnation has emerged from UEFA Vice-President Laura McAllister, who described the dismissal as a ‘deeply troubling message to all of us seeking change’ and praised Lamour as a ‘principled leader.’ The head of the Hungarian Football Federation, Csanyi, also criticized the dismissal, citing ‘serious irregularities in professional assessment, ethical standards, and leadership skills.’

In response to the broader FFE controversy, UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), and CONCACAF issued an open letter accusing FIFA and Infantino of breaking trust through deception. Although FIFA issued an apology for the project’s improper implementation, the situation has increased pressure on Infantino ahead of his bid for a fourth term in the March 2027 elections.
