Fiji banking sector expansion and modernization
Overview
The banking sector in Fiji is undergoing a period of physical expansion and technological modernization. HFC Bank initiated this trend by opening a new branch in Pacific Harbour to serve growing tourism and residential sectors, a move CEO Rakesh Ram described as a strategy to “invest in regional and growing centers.”
Following this, other financial institutions have increased their local presence and technical capabilities. BRED Bank Fiji established a new headquarters in Suva and modernized its international payment systems by migrating to a cloud-based issuing platform to enhance security and e-commerce support. Simultaneously, Westpac Pacific introduced the ‘Future Banker Development Series,’ a six-month training program designed to strengthen professional expertise for emerging bankers in Fiji and Papua New Guinea.
