Mexico hosted several international and national film festivals in 2026. The 31st Matatena International Film Festival for Children ran from August 8 to August 23 in Mexico City and the State of Mexico. The 24th Morelia International Film Festival (FICM) took place from October 16 to 25, 2026, in Michoacán, featuring 96 competing films. The festival opened with ‘Campeón gabacho’, directed by Jonás Cuarón. Prior to the event, filmmaker Guillermo del Toro called upon Mexico’s Federal Ministry of Culture to support the festival following warnings from FICM founder Daniela Michel regarding precarious economic conditions. High-profile attendees included Guillermo del Toro, Alfonso Cuarón, Diego Luna, and ~~Juan Antonio Bayona.~~ Gael García Bernal. Del Toro also noted that~~ the Filmoteca’s work “allows us to have a past and a future.” The ~~24th edition of FICM~~ festival concluded with ‘6 meses en el edificio rosa con azul’ by Bruno Santamaría Razo winning Best Mexican Fiction Feature and the Audience Award. Other winners included ‘Forensita’ by Pablo ~~Vaca and~~ Vaca, ‘Cuna de lobas’ by Emilia Schettino ~~Bustamante.~~ Bustamante, and ‘Lo demás es ruido’ by Nicolás Pereda. During the festival, students interrupted sessions to protest the severe water crisis in Guadalajara, reporting the use of contaminated water. Del Toro supported the students, arguing that cultural forums are appropriate for social discourse.
