Film production subsidies in Spain and Canary Islands

The Canary Islands are utilizing film subsidies to increase international visibility and participation in major global projects. Through the Canary Islands Film program, local companies are engaging in minority co-productions, such as the Philippine film ‘Magallanes’, which allows local producers to secure intellectual property and economic rights. For 2026, the regional government has allocated 2.925 million euros toward various subsidy lines, including one million euros specifically for minority co-productions.

On a national level, the Spanish Ministry of Culture has awarded over 30 million euros to 31 feature film production projects for 2026 via the ICAA Film Protection Fund. Of this total, two million euros is designated for two film projects to be shot in the Canary Islands. The national funding distribution emphasizes international co-productions, which account for 64.21% of the total allocation, and includes requirements to reduce the gender gap by ensuring beneficiary projects include at least 40% female technical staff.
