Filo Jet shipwreck investigation

Overview

Following the shipwreck of the passenger vessel Filo Jet near Girne, which resulted in 10 deaths and 18 missing persons, investigations have focused on the validity of the captain’s maritime credentials.

Court documents suggest the captain, M. Ö., allegedly purchased a maritime license from Honduras for $3,500 after his Turkish credentials expired. While the Directorate of Ports initially issued a statement confirming that the captain’s certification from Honduras was a valid Seafarer Competency Certificate recognized under International Maritime Organization (IMO) standards and valid until October 30, 2029, investigators noted the document lacked validity for Turkish-flagged vessels.

Further findings indicate negligence during the voyage. Despite warnings from the second captain, M. N. S., that the ship was taking on water, the captain proceeded with the journey. Experts suggested that slowing the vessel upon detecting water ingress might have allowed it to return safely to Girne Port.
