Sweden is experiencing financial pressures within its educational sector, affecting both individual students and institutional infrastructure.

Students face severe financial strain due to rising rent and food costs. While a report from Sveriges Förenade Studentkårer (SFS) indicates that the total supply of student housing has increased due to large-scale construction, affordability and availability remain critical issues. Nearly 90% of students cannot be guaranteed secure, independent housing by the start of the autumn term. In 23 out of 34 surveyed locations, rent levels are considered too high for student budgets. In Stockholm, the average waiting time for an apartment is 4.7 years. SFS Chairman Hampus Haugland noted that while some cities have improved from ‘red’ to ‘yellow’ status, high costs and long queues hinder the ability to attract academic talent. To mitigate this, SFS has proposed increasing student grants, co-financing affordable housing, and implementing a specific housing allowance.

Simultaneously, school facilities face significant budget deficits. Following extensive renovations and new construction, rental costs for premises reached 36.4 million SEK over the past year. For a facility covering 21,775 square meters, the new cafeteria is the most expensive building at 2,768 SEK per square meter. Although relocating nursing education students helped reduce the per-student facility cost from 42,500 SEK to 37,300 SEK, this remains well above the projected 2025 budget of 23,000 to 28,000 SEK, resulting in an estimated deficit of approximately 12 million SEK.
