Financial crisis at Hospital Regional del Magdalena Medio
Overview
The Santander Governor’s Office has issued an alert regarding the worsening financial situation of the Hospital Regional del Magdalena Medio in Barrancabermeja. Debt at the facility has reportedly surged from approximately $9,000 million at the time of its national intervention in July 2024 to roughly $20,000 million.
Edwing Prada, the Santander Secretary of Health, questioned the effectiveness of the intervention led by the National Superintendency of Health (Supersalud), which began following an audit that identified 31 administrative and financial deficiencies. Prada warned that the current debt levels could jeopardize the hospital’s ability to operate by the end of 2026. The regional government has called upon the Ministry of Health and Supersalud to review the intervention and has suggested that management of the hospital be returned to the department.
