Financial fraud and embezzlement legal cases in Vietnam

Overview

Legal proceedings in Vietnam have addressed several cases of financial misconduct and fraud involving significant sums of money.

In Hanoi, a court annulled a previous five-year sentence for Nguyễn Thị Hằng, a former social affairs official accused of embezzling approximately 4 million VND intended for veterans. The case has been returned to investigators for further inquiry following an appeal.

In Quảng Ninh, Nguyễn Thị Hường was sentenced to 17 years in prison for “fraudulent appropriation of property.” Hường allegedly used social media to deceive 13 victims into investing 11.69 billion VND by promising high returns on real estate transactions using fraudulent land use certificates.

Additionally, the Hanoi People's Court issued sentences to members of a large investment fraud ring led by Ho Bich Ngoc. The group misappropriated over 40 billion VND by luring victims into unauthorized foreign exchange and cryptocurrency platforms. Participants used luxury items to project success and build credibility. In total, 35 accomplices received various sentences for their involvement in the scheme.
