Financial fraud and impersonation scams in East Asia
Overview
Law enforcement and financial institutions in China and Taiwan have intervened in several fraudulent schemes targeting individuals through various deceptive methods.
In Hunan Province, China, police intercepted a case where an 80-year-old man attempted to deposit 1.7 million NDT, which was discovered to be counterfeit training notes used for bank staff practice. The victim had been misled by a loan broker.
In Taiwan, bank staff in Yonghe prevented a 61-year-old man from losing 14 million TWD to an investment scam involving a group calling themselves ‘JCQ Investment Consultant’.
Additionally, in Qingdao, China, police arrested a man named Song for impersonating a military officer. Song used uniforms and falsified resumes to establish romantic relationships with women on social media, defrauding more than 10 individuals.
