Financial fraud targeting elderly populations in Latin Amier

Overview

Reports indicate a rise in financial fraud targeting senior citizens across Latin America. In Mexico City, the Citizen Council for Security and Justice issued an alert regarding the ‘pensionazo’ scheme. In this scam, perpetrators use social media, telephone calls, or in-person contact to promise increased pension amounts in exchange for sensitive personal documents and upfront administrative fees. In some instances, scammers apply for loans in the victims’ names, creating debts that are deducted from their pensions.

Individual reports of fraud have also emerged in Mexico and Colombia. In Córdoba, Mexico, an elderly woman fell victim to a card-swapping scheme at an ATM after being manipulated by an individual posing as a bystander. Meanwhile, in Villavicencio, Colombia, a retired teacher is contesting 24 million pesos in fraudulent credit card charges, claiming the transactions occurred in a different city while she was elsewhere.
