Financial institution adoption of asset tokenization
Overview
Financial institutions are increasingly integrating blockchain technology to bridge traditional capital markets with decentralized finance (DeFi) through the tokenization of real-world assets (RWAs).
Initial developments include the creation of modular on-chain infrastructure by CyphaLab to help fund managers coordinate digital-asset transactions. Additionally, New York Life Investment Management (NYLIM) partnered with Centrifuge to bring a US high-yield corporate bond strategy to the Avalanche blockchain, allowing institutional investors to use USDC for subscriptions and redemptions.
The movement has since accelerated, with strategic collaborations such as the one between Franklin Templeton and Animoca Brands aimed at facilitating institutional adoption of tokenized assets ranging from financial instruments to art and collectibles. Market projections suggest the RWA sector could reach US$30 trillion by 2033. Bitfinex Securities has also expanded its presence, reporting over $500 million in listed assets. While the technology offers faster settlement and issuance, industry leaders note that further regulatory framework development is required to fully enhance capital accessibility.
