Fincantieri expands underwater champion with submarine boost
Entities: Lithuanian Navy · Fincantieri · Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAR) · Naval Group · Italian Navy (Marina Militare)
Overview
In June 2026 an IDS hackathon produced AI‑driven prototypes for coordinated surface, aerial and underwater vehicles, leading to a licensing deal with Eni for the “Clean Sea” subsea robot. By July 2026 Fincantieri acquired controlling stakes in Next Geosolutions, WSense, Graal Tech and Defcomm, creating a 1,500‑person “underwater pole” in Italy, the UK, the Netherlands, Norway and the UAE. The platform is expected to lift underwater‑business revenue above €1.1 billion in 2026 and add roughly €60 million to profit, supporting a 30 % EPS rise by 2028. CEO Pierroberto Folgiero highlighted its strategic role in protecting critical subsea infrastructure.
The shipbuilder also signed MoUs with Croatian yards Brodotrogir Cruise and Iskra Shipyard to cooperate on Croatia’s Multi‑Role Corvette programme, widening its naval‑defence portfolio.
On 23 July 2026 Fincantieri signed an eighth OCCAR amendment for the U212 NFS submarine programme, worth about €317 million. The deal adds new counter‑measure and anti‑torpedo systems from its WASS unit, upgrades the combat management system and introduces lithium‑ion batteries alongside fuel‑cell propulsion. A two‑year acceleration moves the fourth submarine’s delivery from 2034 to 2032, establishing a cadence of one boat per year from 2029 to 2032. Technical details note a 59‑metre hull, 1,600‑ton submerged displacement and an air‑independent propulsion suite that extends underwater endurance.
A follow‑up announcement on 26 July reiterated the amendment, confirming the added capabilities and the accelerated schedule, underscoring Fincantieri’s commitment to full‑life‑cycle support for Italy’s next‑generation submarines and further integrating high‑tech national components into its underwater portfolio.
