Finland ASF outbreak expands and impacts pork exports

In late July 2026, Finland confirmed its first cases of African swine fever (ASF) in wild boars near the Russian border, specifically in the Virolahti municipality. The Finnish Food Authority (Ruokavirasto) established a containment zone covering Virolahti, Miehikkälä, and southern Lappeenranta. This outbreak resulted in Finland losing its ASF-free status from the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH). Major pork exporters Atria and HK Foods halted shipments to non-EU markets, including China, Japan, and South Korea. These export bans, which could last up to three years, threaten a sector that exports approximately €74 million annually. While the disease has not yet been detected in domestic pig farms, the Swedish farmers’ union warned of potential regional spread.
