Finland cyanobacteria monitoring
Overview
In late July 2026 Finnish environmental authorities reported the detection of cyanobacteria at two lake sites—Pororanta on Liekovesi in Sastamala and Yttilän Otta in Köyliönjärvi, Säkylä—with only slight concentrations and surface temperatures a degree above the national average.
Two days later the Finnish Environment Institute (Syke) launched a pilot that automates weekly cyanobacteria assessments for the Vesi.fi service. The system aggregates data from about 350 observation sites and tens of thousands of citizen reports submitted via the Havaintolähetti app. While most sites showed no cyanobacteria, limited presence was noted at 28 locations and abundant blooms were recorded in the Pirkanmaa, Uusimaa and Varsinais‑Suomi regions. The automation aims to speed analysis, improve public communication and provide finer regional detail as conditions change rapidly with wind and weather.
