While the results challenge the assumption that screen time is inherently harmful, researchers emphasize that this is an observational association rather than proof of causality and caution that excessive use can still lead to issues like sleep deprivation. Additionally, the research noted gender-specific links between physical activity and cognitive function: regular light physical activity was associated with better working memory in girls, while guided physical activity was linked to better working memory in boys. Researchers stressed the importance of balancing screen use with physical activity. Newer research presents a more complex view of digital exposure. While the PANIC project findings link active consumption—such as digital reading, computer-based homework, or video games—to better reaction times and memory accuracy, a separate study published in the ‘World Journal of Pediatrics’ suggests potential risks. This research, involving 502 children, indicates that high exposure during the first year of life and around age six may be associated with lower academic performance and reduced working memory, potentially displacing critical developmental interactions. Further research involving brain scans has highlighted potential structural impacts, linking prolonged video gaming to the thinning of the cerebral cortex in the frontal and parietal regions.
