Colombia has seen a significant shift toward digital finance, with non-presential channels accounting for 83% of financial system transactions by the end of 2025. A primary driver of this transition is the Bre-B instant payment system, launched by the Banco de la República in October 2025 to enable immediate transfers via QR codes or unique keys. Following its first year of operation, the Bre-B system has demonstrated substantial growth. It has processed over 1.7 billion transactions totaling more than 262 trillion COP, reaching over 36 million unique users. The system’s operational capacity has scaled significantly, moving from an average of 1.5 million daily operations to a peak of 10.4 million transactions in a single day in October 2026. Participation from financial entities has also expanded from approximately 25 to 245, with notable growth in the savings and credit cooperative sector. As of October 2026, data indicates that 81% of the system’s users utilize their mobile numbers as digital keys. Despite this widespread adoption, cybersecurity experts have raised concerns regarding increasing risks, specifically citing “social engineering and fraudulent digital receipts.”
