Fire incidents and arson in Italy
Overview
In late September 2026, Italy experienced separate residential fires. In Alghero, a blaze on Viale Europa required the evacuation of foreign nationals, though rapid intervention prevented the fire from consuming the entire apartment. In Montecchio, a fatal fire on Via della Vite resulted in the deaths of an 88-year-old woman and her dog. The Nucleo Investigativo Antincendio (NIA) seized the apartment to investigate whether smoke inhalation or carbon monoxide caused the fatalities.
By early October, security concerns increased in Alghero following arson attacks in the Sant’Agostino district. Two cars were set on fire almost simultaneously on Via Cravellet and Via Foradada. Local law enforcement has launched an investigation into these attacks, which follow the recent discovery of a “rudimentary explosive device” in the Carrabuffas area.
