Firework and weapon surrender in The Hague
Overview
During a safety week in The Hague held from October 5 to 11, 2026, residents surrendered nearly 250 kilograms of fireworks and 19 weapons. This amount marks a significant increase compared to the 80 kilograms of fireworks handed in during the previous year.
Mayor Jan van Zanen suggested the rise in surrendered fireworks might be related to a national consumer ban on fireworks that began on August 1, 2026. The surrendered weapons included knives, a machete, brass knuckles, and a ‘ploertendoder’.
Alongside the surrender program, police inspected ten secondary schools and security lockers at hospitality venues, resulting in the seizure of 26 weapons and approximately eight kilograms of drugs.
