Fiscal deficit trends in Czech Republic and Slovakia

Financial reports from the Czech Republic and Slovakia indicate rising deficits at both municipal and national levels.

In the Czech Republic, the city of České Budějovice reported a first-half deficit of 81 million CZK, though officials noted that expenditures remained at 37 percent of projections. Concurrently, the Pardubice-based radar manufacturer ERA experienced a 43 percent decline in operating results, which management attributed to the specific structure of defense sector deliveries.

By late September, national-level data showed worsening fiscal positions in both countries. Slovakia reported a cash deficit of 4.087 billion euros, driven by an 8 percent increase in expenditures that matched revenue growth, alongside a 36.6 percent rise in debt servicing costs. In the Czech Republic, the government deficit reached 194.5 billion koruna for the first three quarters, a year-on-year increase of approximately 41 billion koruna. This national deficit was attributed to expenditures outstripping revenue growth, specifically due to rising costs in social benefits, debt servicing, and investments in defense and transport infrastructure.
