Flamengo player injury and officiating controversy

Overview

Flamengo has issued an official statement criticizing match officiating following a series of player injuries, reporting that its players have suffered nine fractures during 2026 matches. The club described the frequency as ‘practically one fracture per month’ and expressed frustration with referees for allowing ‘harsh and aggressive’ plays without timely stoppages.

During a derby against Fluminense, defender Danilo sustained two jaw fractures following a collision with goalkeeper Fábio. Despite bleeding, Danilo remained in the match until the final whistle. He underwent surgery on October 12 to repair the fractures, noting that his face is currently held together by ‘plates and screws.’

Danilo is expected to be sidelined for over a month, causing the club to miss critical fixtures in the Campeonato Brasileiro and the Copa Libertadores semifinals against Estudiantes. Midfielder Carrascal also suffered facial bruising during the same match and is undergoing medical evaluation.
