Flash flooding in Madrigueras, Spain
Overview
Severe flash flooding struck Madrigueras in Albacete, Spain, following an intense storm that delivered over 140 liters of rain per square meter in a short period. The flooding resulted in the death of a 102-year-old woman and necessitated the rescue of approximately 90 people. The town’s geography, situated in a natural hollow where seasonal streams and branches of the Valdemembra river converge, exacerbated the impact as water channeled directly into the urban center.
In the immediate aftermath, the Castilla-La Mancha regional government activated the METEOCAM emergency plan. Regional President Emiliano García-Page indicated intentions to request a declaration of a “catastrophic zone” to access state funds for damages. Local infrastructure was heavily impacted, including the flooding of the local health center, which forced the temporary relocation of medical services.
As recovery efforts progressed, the Diputación de Albacete moved to provide direct economic aid to the Madrigueras City Council to assist with extraordinary expenses and infrastructure repairs. Provincial President Santi Cabañero stated that the institution would support reconstruction and advocate for further assistance from higher administrative levels.
