Flooding and emergency response in Nigeria

Overview

Flash flooding and heavy rainfall have caused significant disruption and damage across multiple regions in Nigeria.

In Kaduna, emergency agencies including NEMA and the Red Cross Society launched search, rescue, and evacuation operations following a flash flood in the Kaduna metropolis. The incident, which reportedly resulted in at least one drowning, was attributed by officials to the “indiscriminate disposal of non-biodegradable waste” clogging drainage channels.

In the Niger Delta region, flooding has caused extensive infrastructure damage. In Delta State, a collapsed culvert at Oviri Junction has made sections of the East-West Road impassable. Relief efforts have included clearing blocked canals in Warri South and inspections in Ukwani Local Government Area. In Rivers State, the government has initiated both the distribution of emergency materials and long-term engineering plans to address urban planning and drainage issues.
