Flooding in São Paulo Vale do Ribeira
Overview
Severe flooding in the Vale do Ribeira region of São Paulo, caused by heavy rainfall and the overflowing of the Ribeira de Iguape River, has led to emergency declarations in several municipalities, including Eldorado, Iporanga, Barra do Turvo, Registro, Ribeira, and Piracaia.
The Ribeira de Iguape River rose significantly, with some reports indicating a rise of up to 12 meters above normal levels. Approximately 2,000 people have been affected, with at least 152 families displaced to temporary shelters. Governor Tarcísio de Freitas mobilized rescue forces, including boats and helicopters, to reach isolated indigenous and quilombola settlements. State authorities also distributed water purification supplies, food, and clothing.
Relief efforts have continued through inter-municipal cooperation. The Sorocaba City Hall has maintained its response to the crisis in Eldorado and Iporanga by dispatching essential supplies, such as water, blankets, and hygiene products, using both trucks and a donated helicopter. Recent coordination efforts in Sorocaba have included the continued delivery of aid, such as water and blankets, to those affected by the floods in the Vale do Ribeira region.
