Air France-KLM’s Flying Blue loyalty program is implementing a new tiered structure for award ticket redemptions on flights operated by Air France and KLM, effective September 8, 2026. The system introduces three fare bundles: Light, Standard, and Flex. The “Light” tier offers the lowest mileage costs but includes significant restrictions. In Economy and Premium Economy, Light fares exclude checked baggage and advance seat selection. In Business Class, the Light tier will include only one piece of checked baggage and will exclude lounge access and complimentary seat selection. These Light awards are neither changeable nor refundable. Standard and Flex tiers offer increased flexibility, such as checked bags, refunds, and ticket changes, for additional mileage costs. The Flex tier provides the highest level of service, including free changes and advance seat selection. While the Light tier is highly restrictive, elite status holders will retain certain benefits to mitigate these changes. Silver members will regain baggage and seat selection benefits, Gold members will retain lounge access, and Platinum members will be permitted to perform free award changes and refunds. These changes apply specifically to Air France and KLM operated flights; pricing for partner airlines remains unchanged, and the new tiers do not apply to La Premiere awards. Existing tickets will be honored under current conditions. This move aligns Flying Blue with other loyalty programs, such as Miles & More, which utilize similar tiered pricing models to offer lower entry-level mile costs. However, critics suggest the restructuring “effectively devalues the program” by increasing the real cost of award travel for members seeking consistent benefits.
