Food and water contamination alerts in Chile and Peru
Overview
In mid-September 2026, health authorities in Chile and Peru issued sanitary alerts following the detection of harmful bacteria in various products. In Chile, the Ministry of Health ordered the withdrawal of Matthei brand sliced cheese due to the presence of Listeria monocytogenes. Simultaneously, Peru’s Ministry of Health, through Digesa, ordered the withdrawal of Timonel and Lybre brand bottled water after laboratory analysis confirmed Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
By early October, the situation in Chile escalated as the Biobío Regional Ministerial Secretariat of Health ordered a temporary suspension of all production at the Lácteos Matthei processing plant in Los Ángeles. This suspension followed four separate samplings in September that identified Listeria monocytogenes in various cheese samples. While authorities previously issued a specific alert for one batch of 250-gram sliced mantecoso cheese, the new mandate extends to all products manufactured at the facility until corrective actions are verified.
