Food insecurity and malnutrition in Gaza

Medical professionals in Gaza have reported rising rates of malnutrition, stunting, and significant weight loss among children due to food shortages and high prices. At Al-Rantisi Hospital, doctors noted treating approximately 30 cases of acute and severe malnutrition daily, warning of risks such as decreased immunity and death.

Conflicting assessments of the nutritional crisis have since emerged. Local testimonies from displaced persons in areas like Khan Younis describe a catastrophic situation characterized by extreme hunger and a heavy reliance on struggling charitable soup kitchens. Human rights observers have warned that a collapsing healthcare system and the obstruction of international relief aid are driving the deterioration.

In contrast, a UNICEF-coordinated nutrition survey following World Health Organization standards reported that acute malnutrition rates among children remain low, ranging between 0.2% in Khan Younis and Rafah to 0.8% in Gaza City and northern Gaza. These figures fall below the thresholds required for a Phase 5 famine classification, a finding cited by Israeli officials to indicate that famine conditions do not exist in the enclave.
