Food insecurity in Mozambique
Overview
Mozambique is facing a national trend of worsening food insecurity. An analysis by the Technical Secretariat for Food and Nutritional Security (SETSAN) projected that acute food insecurity could rise by 55% by March 2027, potentially affecting 1.84 million people. This deterioration is linked to armed conflict in Cabo Delgado, the El Niño weather phenomenon, and depleted household food reserves.
In contrast to the national outlook, Manica province reported a significant decrease in food insecurity. The number of people affected in the province fell from 248,851 during the first quarter of the year to approximately 101,222 between April and September. Local authorities attributed this improvement to increased agricultural production and resilience measures, such as the distribution of diesel water pumps and the implementation of solar-powered irrigation systems under an emergency recovery program.
