Food poisoning outbreak at Saturn hotel

Overview

A mass food poisoning incident at the Neko Hotel in Saturn, Romania, affected 58 people, including 11 minors. Following the outbreak, several individuals, including a pregnant woman and two children, were hospitalized due to symptoms such as severe abdominal pain and chills.

Initial inspections by the National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority (ANSVSA) and the Consumer Protection Agency identified unhygienic conditions, improper food storage, and neglected refrigeration. Authorities seized 81 kilograms of unfit meat, fish, dairy, and eggs, and issued fines exceeding 117,000 lei. It was noted that the hotel had been fined for similar violations just three days prior to the incident.

An epidemiological investigation by the Constanța Public Health Directorate (DSP) later confirmed that while water and surface sanitation were compliant, specific food items were contaminated. Tests on chicken stew and mashed potatoes revealed levels of Enterobacteriaceae exceeding permitted limits. Additionally, health officials identified the presence of Staphylococcus aureus in one food block employee.
