Food safety enforcement in Karlsruhe

The Karlsruhe District Office reported on its 2025 food safety and consumer protection activities, noting that authorities conducted nearly 3,000 inspections across more than 4,600 businesses. These inspections led to over 1,100 measures, including fines, deficiency reports, and criminal proceedings. One notable violation involved an attempt to import approximately one ton of confectionery products from Syria that lacked proper labeling or composition details.

Following these reports, the district administration addressed the limitations of its ‘Ekelliste’ (disgust list), explaining that not all food safety violations are made public. To be included on the list, a violation must typically meet high legal thresholds, such as being confirmed by two independent laboratory analyses or involving significant hygiene breaches subject to fines of at least 350 euros or criminal sanctions. Structural defects or documentation errors that do not directly affect food safety are excluded from public listing.
