Football violence and stadium bans in Naples

Overview

Authorities in Naples have implemented several stadium access bans (DASPO) in response to various incidents of misconduct and violence at sporting events.

In mid-October, the Police Commissioner issued 19 bans ranging from two to six years. These measures addressed offenses such as trespassing, damaging property, using smoke bombs, and assaulting officials during matches involving teams like A.C.D. Santa Maria la Carità, Virtus Sibilla Bacoli, Napoli, and Juve Stabia.

Following a violent brawl on October 25 at the ‘Conte’ stadium in Pozzuoli during a match between Puteolana and Portici, police issued an additional 11 bans. These orders, lasting between five and ten years, were issued after a riot left a supporter, 34-year-old Mario Spedaliere, in critical condition with severe head trauma after being struck with a wooden club.

Legal actions following the riot have led to several arrests. A 19-year-old suspect has been placed under house arrest with an electronic bracelet after confessing to the assault, while another 19-year-old has been ordered into prison. Although eight individuals were initially arrested in flagrante, a judge recently validated only two of five deferred arrests due to insufficient evidence for three suspects. In response to the violence, the Prefect of Naples has ordered that all remaining home matches for Puteolana for the 2026/2027 season be played behind closed doors without spectators.
